The Warner Porch
Client: Dan and Madeline Warner
Date: May 2024
The home is a classic 60’s NorthEast Minneapolis postage stamp home that sits on a corner lot in a quiet part of the city. The existing porch had that ‘built by a homeowner on the weekend’ vibe so we removed it entirely and built a beautiful timber-frame inspired porch in its place. We maxed out the size without changing any existing window locations or messing with roof lines. This project strikes a balance between modest budget and timeless craftsmanship.
We used green treated for all the posts and structural members but pre-finished it all with PPG Proluxe (sikkens) so it looks like stained cedar.
The clients also wanted to explore composite decking as they wanted a low maintenance deck but we ultimately opted for Ipe decking which was also prestained. Even left to the elements it would last at least 100 years. We notched in all the skirting into the post which is not only beautiful but also makes for a very rigid connection, those details and others like start and stop chamfers make this a modern interpretation of ancient form of building.
